The F1 engine, with 1. 5 million pounds of thrust, was the powerplant for the first stage of the 363foot long Saturn V launch vehicle that took the first astronauts to the Moon for six successful landing missions between 1969 and 1972 in the Project Apollo program.
Created Date: 5: 22: 30 PM The F1 is a gasgenerator cycle rocket engine developed in the United States by Rocketdyne in the late 1950s and used in the Saturn V rocket in the 1960s and early 1970s. Five F1 engines were used in the SIC first stage of each Saturn V, which served as the main launch vehicle of the Apollo program.
The F1 was originally developed by Rocketdyne to meet a 1955 U. S. Air Force requirement for a very large rocket engine. The eventual result of that requirement was two engines, the E1, and the much larger F1. The E1, although successfully tested in static firing, was quickly seen as a technological deadend, and was abandoned for the larger, more powerful F1.
Adapted from p. 12 of the F1 Rocket Engine Technical Manual Supplement (R A) Adaptation by heroicrelics. In addition to its duties in sustaining proper combustion, the injector also played a role in the initial ignition of the engine. Originally a classified supplement to the F1 Rocket Engine Technical Manual: Engine Data (R ) (presumably because information about the injector and the way it was designed to overcome combustion instability was sensitive at the time), it has long since been downgraded to" declassified".
Science How NASA brought the monstrous F1 moon rocket engine back to life The story of young engineers who resurrected an engine nearly twice their age. of the F1 engine, which, according to US web sites10, is the pride of the American rocket industry, the most powerful ever developed, the most reliable, etc.
The latest set of documents on the NTRS included a copy of a 1969 manual for the F1 rocket engine. Due to the size of the document (310mb) I have not checked it out yet, but I suspect that it is comprehensive. See: F1 rocket engine operating instructions (482 pages, 310mb).
